Happy or Not Happy

The receptionist is gone today. There is a new lady now. The last few days she seemed so stressed that I took pity on her. I wanted to talk to her to make her day easier, but at the end I couldn't make myself to do it except for some casual "hi"s (I could be shy with new people).

One artist quit last Friday. It's quite obvious. He always seemed to be out of the group. He modelled things that were not so important and some were never even used. I just wonder why.

Apparently some people are not so happy here..

Anyway, apology if I talk too much about how happy and proud I am as a game programmer. I'm still in the very good mood of someone who just made one of her dreams come true =D I hope this would last very long ;)

Do You Have the Passion?

The main difference I feel between the normal IT and game industry is that everyone seems to be in love with their job here. There's no such thing as "this is such a crappy program, I wouldn't buy it in a thousand years", or finding a way to be lazy as much as possible, or chatting when your boss is not around.

Everybody just wants to code, design, and get the game as good as possible. So much enthusiasm and passion for work. We may be the lucky few. Not many jobs offer you such satisfaction. Not many people like their jobs this much.

Maybe that's why there isn't much $ in this industry.
So that we get only the people that's in for the passion.
It's kind of important, you know =)

The Receptionist Going Crazy

Yesterday the receptionist suddenly said loudly,
"It's so boring here! There's nothing ever happened!"

Oh oh... (everyone was laughing nervously)

And she kept on going,
"The thing is that there isn't much work for me to do here, so it gets really boring at times! I need to interact with people! Here everybody is just staring at the screen everyday whole day long!"

Oh no, not another person telling us to stop staring at the screen! We need the screen!

"I don't even have window to see things outside! All windows are closed!"

Well we don't like sunlight. It's making our screen blurry. We like our screens.

"Can I just open the door? (referring to the back door near her) Anyone mind?"

There was some quite nodding.

"At least I can hear the sound of the wind..."

She finally gave up in her attempt to change our beautiful life.

Poor receptionist...
And I just knew that once there was one lady here who quit only after one week of work...

Athena's Legacy

Athena's Legacy is another blog from a girl game developer (I'm not sure whether she's a programmer or an artist). She works at Electronic Arts. It has a lot of interesting links. I thought of posting the links here, but why do the same thing twice. I just give the link of the website to you .

The Receptionist Story

In my company, the only other woman is the receptionist. 30 or 40 something, and has no idea whatsoever about game. She actually just came about a few weeks ago, replacing the previous receptionist, who always acted like mom to all of us.

Today she went around and asked each one of us, "do you have a magazine that you have read or anything like that?" Perhaps she feel a bit bored in the office full of people talking only about thing she doesn't have a clue of.

I heard everybody answered lazily and as if in slow motion, "no.."

We're a bunch of geeks here, lady. We read stuff from the Internet. We don't buy and read magazine unless the whole thing talk only about some cool special effects in games or movies. After all, we don't have time to read magazine really. If there's any free time we would rather spend it doing endless coding, modelling, or playing online games with our mates.

She could be the only normal person around here. I'm the second normal.

Hi, This is Me

I'm one of few girls that like to play games. And one of even fewer girl game developers there is. More, a game programmer (as if the box is not small enough yet).

But it's true. It could be really lonely in this field. I am the first and only girl in both my game classes certificate and my current workplace. I was one of the 2 girls in the year of my bachelor degree.

I'm not sure what my purpose to have this blog yet, but just to share some side stories I experience. And maybe some thoughts and ideas.
At the moment I would like to be anonymous, although it's almost impossible to be completely anonymous these days, I think unless someone is super-curious about who I am or I have made some terrible mistakes, nobody would try that hard. =)

Thinking about it, considering the number of game companies in this city and the girls work at them, it would be fairly easy to know who I am. At least for people in the industry, that is.

O well, just have fun for now, shall we? Why bother to hide you ask? Coz it sounds interesting? I like it. That's one of the greatest thing on the internet =D
